The word ‘hardware’ does not conjure up particularly exciting thoughts - a search on Google is just as likely to return help on where to buy nails and hinges as it is to help with industrial automation hardware. But, although the term itself might not be inspirational, hardware is certainly exciting again and it’s innovations in hardware that is driving much of the change that we are seeing in the way that users interact with industrial IT systems.
Perhaps the best example is the increasing use of mobile devices, driven by their widespread adoption in mainstream IT and the desire by an increasing number of users to enjoy the same ‘experience’ in the work environment.
Whilst the Apple iPad has been responsible for creating this sea change, and also generating a growing debate around BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), our experience is that more practical ruggedised versions are being deployed despite their lack of sleek design!
Clearly mobile computing is heavily reliant on communications and wireless technology, not surprising then that these areas are also booming along with the less desirable associated security concerns – again, a transfer from the mainstream IT market.
I can remember two occasions when I have been truly excited about hardware: once when I saw the Sinclair ZX81 and the second when I finally succumbed to owning an Apple iPad as something of a technology laggard – I hope the third comes along slightly quicker!
