Today we're celebrating World Environment Day, an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round and climax on 5 June every year, involving everyone around the world. Our environmental steering group decided to focus on local habitats.
Thanks to the Cheshire Wildlife Trust who presented a display on local wilderness reserves and they recent work they have done to protect these areas.
We also decided to support the lovely Hedgehog! You may not know that the hedgehogs of Britain are dying out at a rate of about a fifth of the population every four years. They are now listed as a protected species.
Tips on making your garden more hedgehog friendly:
- Make a small gap for them under the fence so they can get in and out and make sure all your neighbours do the same
- Put down food and water for them
- Be careful with Mowers, Strimmers and Garden Power Tools
- Avoid using slug pellets - they can kill Hedgehogs!
- Have some undergrowth and bushes that is more natural for them and allow them to wander freely
Thanks to everyone who donated dog food to feed the sick hedgehogs at the Withington Hedgehog Hospital - some of the rescued Hedgehogs visited us in the office.
