Global Alignment on the Power of M2M

Recent survey findings released from a study conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of SAP highlight that increases in Business Insight, Efficiency, Productivity, Collaboration and Mobility present the biggest benefits and opportunities from the implementation of M2M technologies.

The survey of over 750 key IT Decision Makers in the US, UK, Germany, China, India and Brazil, presented strongly held views that M2M represented the natural evolution of IT technology and agreed with the need for, and benefits of, the broader adoption of M2M.

Furthermore, there was strong agreement from the survey respondents in all six countries, that companies that fail to implement M2M technologies significantly risk falling behind their competitors.

Tangible Benefits – Perceived tangible benefits of M2M deployments:
Providing companies with greater insight into their business.
        China 96%, India 88%, Brazil 86%, Germany 79%, US 74% & UK 61%
Providing companies with the ability to respond to real world events:
        China 92%, India 86%, Brazil 82%, Germany 82%, US 78% &  UK 73%

Biggest Opportunities - The biggest opportunities for M2M in the workplace:
Increased efficiency  was the No. 1 response in Brazil 54%, UK 53% and US 49%
Increased employee productivity was the top selection in China 69%
Increased employee collaboration was the No. 1 opportunity in Germany 63%
Increased workforce mobility was the biggest opportunity in India 65%

Further headline findings:
Almost 30% of IT decision makers believe that Smart Cities will derive the most benefit
  from the deployment of M2M
85% think M2M is part of the natural evolution of the ‘consumerisation of IT’ trend

Obstacles to M2M - Respondents believed that the following obstacles to M2M adoption would need to addresses in order that M2M opportunities and benefits could be fully realised:
Lack of expertise needed to manage the adoption and security of M2M
Knowledge on “how to manage and analyse all the real time data resulting from M2M”
Availability and access to network infrastructure

Interestingly, the IT decisions makers themselves believed that they would not serve as a barrier to the success of M2M and that they were not concerned about a disruption due to M2M. I feel I may need to suggest some rewording of the questions for the next SAP/Harris Survey.
