In my blog last week I talked about some of the good news we
are hearing regarding the rise in (return to) manufacturing in the UK. I also noted the
lack of visibility on how automation and manufacturing IT are not being
recognised as major enablers among all this positive news.
Today I would like to draw your
attention to another good news story. There are groups of highly intelligent
and motivated people in the UK who are trying to highlight and improve how the
use of electronics and automation (be they within manufacturing, retail etc) as
a key driver for improving our lives and improving the economic performance of
UK PLC (if you excuse the pun).
Our homes, workplaces, transport, finance, communication, music, photography, supplies of food, water and utilities are all reliant on functionality provided by Electronic Systems.
Did you know that there are in excess of 800,000
people working on Electronic Systems within the UK? (with another 400,000 plus
working on Electronic Systems embedded in other industrial sectors), this
contributes to 5.4% of our GDP, so we have lots to shout about.

UK-based organisations, and UK units of international organisations, represent an internationally valued capability. Built on our strong heritage of innovative engineering, the UK has a large contingent of such organisations and attracts a significant share of global investment.
The highly intelligent and highly
motivated people I refer to are the authors of the ESCO (Electronic Systems,Challenges and Opportunities) report.
For those of us who feel
passionately about this subject I would recommend a download and read.
