I don’t believe that anyone
would really argue that security isn't well and truly on the agenda for the
industrial IT world. We are now starting to understand more fully is
the scale of this impact: security considerations are set to change the way we
design and manage our industrial IT infrastructures for the foreseeable future
and challenges our traditional model of minimising changes to operational
systems as the threat constantly evolves (other than when functional changes are
required).
Understandably, not all
sectors of manufacturing and infrastructure organisations are responding to the
threat in the same way or with the same degree of business priority, as the
potential threat and implications of breaches of security vary, although we
have seen response driven strongly by individual experiences!

What is more
common across the board though is taking the opportunity when specifying new architectures
to ‘design-in’ security considerations. This extends way beyond just considering 'firewalls' and 'virus checking software' and often has an impact on the
fundamental system architecture - one of many factors that is driving the
adoption of thin-client implementations for example.
The influence of mainstream
IT on the industrial world is not always a pleasant one and security is proving
to be an unwelcome and omnipresent design consideration.
